Northland Mall Demolition
I visited the site in May 2005 and obtained the shots shown here.
It was painful and morbidly fascinating to see such a handsome building in its death-throes -- particularly considering how unblemished it was. Only a few months shy of its 50th anniversary, the building hardly showed its age at all. Hitting it with a wrecking ball seemed like an exercise in absurdity.
Salvage from the building's elegant trim was left to intrepid private citizens. No official effort was made to bring down the beautiful stainless steel letters and their accompanying star bursts intact; the first few letters to fall were reduced to crumpled scrap when they hit the ground.
