Lake Forest Plaza
Photographs from December 28, 2006

The commercial heart of New Orleans East was the Lake Forest Plaza mall, located along Interstate 10, but even before the hurricanes, its fortunes were flagging. Katrina proved to be the mall's final chapter; it was in the early stages of demolition when we arrived.

More on the mall: Highway Host.org.

The Citrus Canal drains the area, surrounding the mall on two sides.

The Greater Saint Stephen Ministries Corporate Headquarters is one of a number of modern suburban office buildings in the area. Most appear to have been abandoned.

Gutted plastic signs, overgrown lots, and weed-filled parking lots fill the area along Read Boulevard.

South of the mall, several strip malls stand gutted and mostly empty.
