The French Quarter
Photographs from December 27-29, 2006

Decay is the natural state of the city. The endless humidity goes to work on every surface, a severe and unrelenting assault. Wood sags, paint peels, metal rusts -- it is simply the way of things.

Fresh paint and cheerful plants emphasize the amazingly human scale of this town.

Even in the Quarter, one cannot escape the looming spector of the 2005 hurricanes:

A block of shuttered windows and Victorian lace -- fantastic!

A search-and-rescue mark -- a very rare sight in the French Quarter.

An elaborate cast iron fence capped with ornamental ears of corn. The house beyond is now known as the Cornstalk hotel.
