Built St. Louis
A few blocks north, other streets in the municipality of Wellston fare worse than many of those in St. Louis proper. Without St. Louis's restrictive building codes requring brick construction, houses here are made of lighter, cheaper materials. With no curbs or sidewalks, and a proliferation of trees that almost seem to be running wild, this block of Wellston Avenue offers a glimpse at what portions of East St. Louis might have looked like decades ago.
