Lower 9th Ward - south
Photographs from December 28th, 2006
View looking west along N. Robertson Street, with the towers of the Clairborne Avenue bridge over the Industrial Canal looming in the distance.
Obviously it was once a school building; today the online yellow pages list this Jourdon Avenue building as the "Ninth Ward Housing Development Corporation Day Care Center".
View looking east from the Industrial Canal levee. "4 Sale" is spray painted onto the collapsed house at left. The house, at 4804 Dauphine Street, was hit by a falling pecan tree. It was later purchased by Operation Comeback, intended to be a model rebuilding project.
A barge and crane passing under the moveable bridge that carries St. Claude Avenue over the Industrial Canal.
The entrance to the Industrial Canal and several of its massive bridges, seen from the Mississippi River. A bit of the Lower 9th can be seen on the other side of the levee.
Downriver from the Lower 9 stands Jefferson Barracks, headquarters of the Louisiana National Guard. The flag at half-mast was in honor of President Gerald Ford, who died earlier that week.
