A far more shocking group of abandoned apartments stands south of the mall. These buildings appear too damaged and deteriorated to have been occupied at the time Katrina hit.

Several of the buildings are collapsing; the need to demolish the entire complex immediately is quite clear.

We saw only one had a search-and-rescue marking, and that was for a dog.

The decaying buildings are an eyesore and a hazard for the occupied apartments behind them.

One of the parking lots has become an open-air chop shop for stripping stolen cars.

Further south, a couple of other complexes appeared to be occupied and in good condition.
