Built St. Louis
The Beauty of Modernism
Kirkwood Methodist Church
201 W. Adams Avenue - Kirkwood (inner west County)
Architect: Schmidt, Perlsee & Black
1964
The interior and exterior are a unified whole, with the steep and curving roof rising to a narrow opening that admits a narrow, sharp shaft of light into the sanctuary. Massive laminated wood beams are held apart and tied together with heavy black metal plates and beams, contrasting with the soaring space and bringing to mind the heavy structural work of a traditional bell tower.
The entire rear wall is unstained glassed, etched at its base and at the center with geometric patterns, flames, an abstracted dove, and even scientific equations, designed by Robert Harmon and executed by the ubiquitous studio of Emil Frie. A free-floating balcony adds additional seating.
