Built St. Louis
The Beauty of Modernism
Priory of St. Mary and St. Louis
Architect: HOK
1962
500 South Mason Road - west County
Three tiers of successively smaller concrete arches form the body of the church, which sits like a crown atop its wooded hilltop site. Within, a gentle flood of diffuse light enters a large, open space with no columns or obstructions. The volume of the space and the sculptural structure of the building are all the decoration it requires. Details include an organ and beautiful screens of lightly tinted glass panels.
