Priory of St. Mary and St. Louis
Architect: HOK
1962
500 South Mason Road - west County

Three tiers of successively smaller concrete arches form the body of the church, which sits like a crown atop its wooded hilltop site. Within, a gentle flood of diffuse light enters a large, open space with no columns or obstructions. The volume of the space and the sculptural structure of the building are all the decoration it requires.

Details include an organ by Gregor Hradetzky of Austira, and beautiful screens of lightly tinted, hand-made Bavarian glass panels. Much of the original artwork was designed under the guidance of Emil Frei, Jr. in the years following the building's completion.
