Built St. Louis > > The Industrial City > > The Bridges > > MacArthur Bridge

Floating equipment south of the Arch, September 2008. Notice the height of the river against the Poplar Street Bridge piers in the background... and the van at left for scale.

Nearly the same view, May 2008. Again, note the water's height against the bridge piers.

Views from the MacArthur Bridge

The notion of the MacArthur Bridge re-opening for public traffic of any kind is probably a wishful fantasy. But there is one way that ordinary people can discover the view from the mighty bridge: by Amtrak. Passenger trains enter the city by crossing the Mighty Mac. Those onboard are treated to postcard views of the city between the bridge's girders, as well as glimpses into the hidden netherworlds of industrial St. Louis and the east riverfront.
