Yes i as i have said have found your site and am reaserching on it i would like to start some kind of online news letter about bringing back the St Louis worlds fair i seem to run into to may walls like very few people still care about this at all i don't understand why hardly anyone crarses about this an longer here i am trying so hard to bring it back even on a smaller scale but am running tino resistance this is very frustrating and aggervating here i have this great plan and hardly anyone s cares enought to jelp please let me know i live in Jefferson cCity Mo two hours from St Louis so can get in all except during the winter months i am here please let me know if you care at all like i do i ahve found just one other site that is really interested in this at all i am depressed about tis! please help if you can i could send smal donations please help me get this to you and than we might help each other i realy do crae about St Louis! and only want to help it put yes i sure do!

Thank you for this site. It is awe inspiring and informational. I marvel at the architecture in St. Louis and wonder how higher ups can just tear it down or let it waste away. Just looking at North St. Louis' deteriation brings tears to my eyes. The beauty is awesome the neglect is pitiful and unnecessary. I wish there was something I could do to help prevent the ravaging of the beautiful old buildings in our city. Oh on the "whiteboy's" page...I'm Black and would still be as cautious as you, going where you've been. Ain't no shame...seriously.

I visited your site, looking for the old Portland Cement [Cementland] in North St. Louis. I friend of mine died last month Bob Cassily. I remember how he worked to resurrect Lafayette Sq. He was tireless. Your site makes me very home sick. When I go home I always try to make a tour of the old places. I graduated from Wash U., in 1976. The University has not lived up to my expectations, it might as well have become a technical school for all its worth. But you have captured many beautiful pictures, exemplfying the St. Louis I grew up with. My grandmother took me on a trolly car that ran along the outskirts of Forest Park. Hopefully you can save the other old sights. Best to a great site.gb

I recently read a true crime book 'Zero to the bone' about an abduction/blackmail case in your neck of the woods.The Coral Court Motel featured heavily in the story and i was able to check out your piece on the now demolished motel.It really brought the story to life. Keep up the excellent work.

I love your site. I grew up in St. Louis but left in 1978. I'm saddened by the decay of the city. Viewing your photographs evoked some great memories. My high school Charles Sumner, Arlington Elementary was were my education began, my HS graduation was held at the Kiel Auditorium. My mother took me to the Arena to see the Ice Capades, Disney On Parade and the Blues..Thanks for so much!

Boy do these pictures bring back memories. I grew up on Broadway in the 50's and 60's. I recognize so much in the pictures, my apartment building, my grandparents homes, all the stores and shops. I attended Holy Cross School and Church. I only wish I had some of the befor pictures. I'm going to go back through my mon's old photos and see.

I have been looking at demolished Detroit blogs for years, and had always hoped to document some of STL's decaying urban structures, but here you have already done it, and done it well. It's so nice to have photographs of these places, that have inspired me to paint them. Hopefully this will reinvigorate this theme in my work! Bravo. Please keep it up.

I spent 12 years living in St. Louis County, moved away for 10 years, recently came back and started thinking about how much I've always liked the homes and buildings in the city. I stumbled across this site, and I couldn't be more impressed. I've learned more in a few hours of checking out the site then in the previous 12 years I lived here. I'm inspired to grab my camera and walking around and see what's out there. I'm finding this has really sparked my interest, and will be coming here a lot. Thanks for such a nice website!! Cheers!!!

Enjoyed the site. My mother was born in St Louis and I spent several summers there visitng my grandmother. In 2005 I returned after a 40 year hiatis. Also was there just a couple weeks ago visiing Busch Stadium. Your site is a great resource to learn more about St Louis and to revisit some of the history of this very old and famous city. On my recent trip I also visited Cairo, Ill. Your web site and visit to Cairo and your explanation of the blight is right on target.

I wanted to express my mutual interest in historical building architecture. However, saying it plainly just doesn't capture the passion underlying the interest. So I thought I'd express it this way instead (i apologize if you find this sort of writing cheezy):

On several occasions, I've find myself in the middle of an ancient city surrounded by history. The old bricks whisper stories I've never heard yet their voices sound familiar. Feeling completely overwhelemed I am compelled to stop. Sometimes I have to sit -- and listen to their stories until my curiosities have been satisfied.

Nice work on the web site! Thanks for taking and sharing so many pictures over the years and helping preserve old St. Louis. Wish I was able to walk the streets during those golden years.

My whole life I have been attracted to architecture, almost to the point of obsession. My friends always yell at me when we are on walks because I stop for several minutes to look at cool buildings. Discovering this site is a godsend. I took my first walk today, down lindell and grand to follow your midtown tour. AMAZING. I felt weird just staring at buildings though. Everybody else just walks by the masonic temple like it is just an everyday thing, but every time I see it I cant help but shake my head and say "wow". And I am the only 22 year old that I know is this way...

Long time fan and first time poster. I have to say that this is a great resource to see what is out there. I love looking through all of these forgotten structures and wishing that I had enough money to buy them and save them from destruction. I'd make a group, buy them, fix them up and use them for retail or for housing for so many of the STL homeless. Keep up the good work.

I would never, ever presume to know what Franklin County needs, or to say it should all be torn down.

Built St. Louis is a fantastic site -- thanks so much for building it. I just wish you had been running the city in the 50's and 60's when so many poor decisions were made by those who thought that the way to save St. Louis was to demolish it. The Gateway Mall is the worst example. Keep it up and THANKS!

Ive lived in a few places in the USA(railroad work does that)and I retired in metro STL because its low cost,etc...been in STL 26 yrs and from my point of view its RACE that keeps this burg from ever being more then a low cost housing area..local schools stink(we home schooled)blacks will not police themselfs,local TV/radio will not cover the truth,and the one newspaper is trash(I read the WSJ)the city will NOT promote the river front like Memphis and Cleveland...mass transit is a joke.....STL Co.cant get there act together(77 towns!!!!!)...
And yes Im selling out and going to Wyoming!!!!!!

What amazes me the most about people who want to "save" St Louis city is that they're newcomers. You don't see any of the old families wanting to save it.

It had it's heyday, now tear it down.

Rebuild. Maybe it can have another NEWER heyday.

I really love this website, but reading the guest book, it seems people are getting the wrong impression. STL is STILL a great city with beautiful neighborhoods, the best revitalization in the US, and plenty of opportunity. STL is not dead, not even close.

It has opened up so much of the city that I would have never known about - it makes me love my city even more yet has me worrying about a few things too. is the coolest site i have found about the historic achitecture of st louis. ive lived here all of my life and seen some of these landmark builings come and go. it reminds me of my child hood. im not that old (32)but have seen alot of these building come down or restored. sites like this will help people who grew up here remember the past history of this great city

This site is really excellent. There were so many buildings destroyed here that I was never aware of, like the Ambassador Building. I live near Southside Tower so I was also surpised to learn that it could've been torn down for a Walgreens! ugggh. anyway, great work!

I was so happy to come across your site. Doing geneology, found that a relative of mine - Sister Ludovine - was a superioress at St Philomena's and have a newspaper item dated 3-8-1938 about her being a nun for 60 years. Her and the school's history is interesting and I would have missed seeing the old building but for you and your photos. Thank you. I love old buildings - being from Boston - and get upset when they are demolished. Again, thanks for the article.

Thank you for your terrific site! It has been several years since I have visited it. I love visiting north St. Louis and it is exciting to see small pockets of reversal of urban decline. I can only hope the city takes steps to stop the brick rustling and strategies of individuals who buy properties to demolish these architectural gems in hopes of getting TIFs for commercial ventures which later become empty. The various styles of architecture are priceless! Keep up the good work!

Thank you for creating this tour! I grew up in ESTL and most of my friends and family continue to live there. In fact, I am more connected to that city than I am Collinsville, where I've been staying for 4 years. People have such negative perceptions of ESTL so I'm glad to see a presentation of how ESTL really looks. Additionally, its striking to see how the city actually appears because growing up in ESTL you don't really notice how many abandoned buildings or empty lots exist. Furthermore, its always great to learn more of your history and culture...thank you!

So what's wrong with just admitting that St. Louis is another of America's ruined cities? Its best years are long behind it now, poisoned by the remnants of America's Industrial Revolution and then liberal cultural revolution of the 1960's. Its future is the same as Detroit, a ruined, burned out, city taken over by a Stone Age culture. We should be proud of how it was destroyed and brought to its knees by a redistribution of wealth, diversity, militant street justice and multiculturalism.

Wonderful site!

I grew up in south St. Louis, but spent several years running a delivery route on the north side. As a lover of architecture I was constantly amazed by the detail and ornamentation on some of the buildings, and saddened by the decay.

Some of the larger buildings were reported to have sub-basements with things like bowling alleys and dance floors, but I did not personally see any. One of my customers even had a wood-burning stove for heat- this was in 1997!

My German ancestors all lived in the North Broadway, Palm St, Theobold in Baden, Hyde Park areas from late 1850-1970's. My great grandfather was a stone mason on the twin spires on Holy Trinity. Thanks for the pixs. Sad to see the decay.

Thanks for the great site. It is an experience to see the dreclining and rehabbed architecture in St. Louis. It gives me things to look for when I'm in the city. I'm only 28 and not from STL, so I don't have the memories about these landmarks. I did drive a car hauler over the McKinley bridge right before the rehab after a wrong turn and slipping a big bill to the tollbooth operator. I was a ballsy kid. LOL I remember looking through the holes in the deck down to the river. Fun stuff. I visit the site regularly, so keep up the good work.

Robert, I just wanted to say that I have strongly enjoyed your website. I semi-grew up in Granite City and moved from there in '92, at the age of 9 to a town about 4 hours southwest of St. Louis. Looking at the pics of the GC area reminided of the sounds and smells of the city. (not exactly a pleasant memory) My family left just as the city was going straight down the gutter. It's been exciting to discover the stories behind buildings I can remember traveling by hundreds of times, not ever knowing what they were. My wife grew up in Hazelwood and we visit STL often. I now have many more ideas planned for future trips thanks to your endeavours.

I enjoyed reading the information on historic architecture in this website. I have'nt been to St. Lous in awhile but love it there, and I have some friends there. Growing up I lived near the Benton Park area, then South Hampton area, and finally near Tower Grove Park and Shaw's Garden. It honestly didn't mean much to me while growing up but to see these neigborhoods now just blows my mind. I just absolutely love your photos and this site. It helps me see the entire city with new eyes. And it's a wonderful city, the good and bad both.
