I am a high school teacher and teach architecture and I showed them this site. One big question is why we have to tear down old building if we can restore them. This is a great site and my kids loved it and has given them inspiration to try to get STL back to its Architectural glory. One funny thing they did say and is also very sad is that most of these building are gone and parking garages stand there now. Keep up the great work

I grew up in STL 40s/50s, grad Cleveland HS '54. Although I still have family, my return trips have been extremely rare since leaving 50 yrs ago.
I didn't realiz how little I knew about the city before running across this site. Between the site and Google Earth I have a new appreciation of the 'ole home town'. You are doing just a terrific for the city. Odd there aren't any number of civic.orgs eager to help. |

Paul Hohmann's blog led me to your site. Fantastic and valuable documentation--particularly love the tour format. Thanks so much.

Nice Homepage for a beautiful city.
I like the old architecture of this town. It's not so unique like in many other cities in the U.S.A. Greetings from Cuxhaven/Germany Dennis http//:www.strandkoje.de |

Happened on your website by accident. I've long been interested in the fate of old North St. Louis. You're doing a great service documenting its former vibrancy and present decline. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for a wonderful website! It breaks my heart to see so many wonderful old buildings ruined by the elements and apathy.
Keep up the wonderful work! |

I appreciate your work. Family lore says much of Coleman Street – St. Louis was built and inhabited by my ancestors (Murphy's) in the 1880-1900 periods. I'm searching to see if that were true. That's how a stumbled on your web site.

Hey thanks for this AWESOME Website!!! I Love it! I grew up in North Saint Louis County spending many days and nights in the city with my dad and then later on with my friends. We were always just in awe of the city, my dad growing up there and knowing so much history. Later as a teen my friends and I went on adventures sneaking into old buildings, climbing to the top and watching the sunrise, it was amazing! Its such a shame that we are so quick to tear down and not save history.

My family originally hailed from Wellston, and I grew up in Ferguson. I am currently doing the research for a new book (a novel) to be set in Wellston and (possibly) St. John. I'm fascinating with the history of St. Louis, especially the transit history and the building history. Your site is such a rich and wonderful, wonderful resource. Thank you so much for all you do! I grew up in North County in the 1950's just across the city limits and attended old McBride High School on North Kingshighway. I have always loved the architectural character of St. Louis, so different from most places. I hope that the decline you so eloquently document will gradually be reversed and the city return to a semblance of its once stature. Great work on your part!

For sentimentality, I pick the Astros' star logo. My runners-up would be Baltimore, with the classic Oriole, and the D in Detroit.

Terrific Website. I travel to St. Louis and go through some of the areas show. I always stop at Pietrowski's Meat market. It saddens me that such a large area of a city has been written off and that is has happened all over the country

Born and raised in St. Louis. Now in Florida for many years. Had no idea the Admiral, and the Avalon theater, as well as Keil Auditorium and others, were in such shape. Great site. Thanks so much for your efforts!

Dear Rob,
I just wanted to say that I really appreciate all your work documenting the urban decay in the E. St. Louis area. I am a graduate student of political science at the University of Illinois and I recently finished a paper on the social consequences of industrialization and deindustrialization which is how I ran across your site. I was born and raised in nearby Cahokia so I have witnessed the unfortunate state that the area is in. Having gone to high school and college with mostly Chicagoans, I also know how little people who are not from the area know about it. I m glad that someone is bringing attention to the rich legacy of the area before everyone who remembers it that way is gone. |

Hello,
I live it North St. Louis not far from Hyde Park close to Ofallon and Fairgound Parks. So much development has been going on since 2006. I totally enjoyed the pictures and reflection on the changes that has happened in our community. But since there has continued to be renovation and revitalizaition in the community it may be time to update some of the pictures. For example many of the houses that you showed as vacant on Bremen facing the park are now rehabbed and inhabited. Keep up the great job and thanks for showcasing St. Louis! |
