Venice, Illinois

Though several times larger and more populace than Brooklyn, Venice lacks even its southern neighbor's dubious claims to fame. Highway 3 goes around most of it, and its industries are largely forgotten. The town's expansion is hemmed by rail lines on three sides, and the industries clustering along the Mississippi River levee to the west.

Venice has three basic sections -- two thinly built areas to the south, on either side of Highway 3, and a larger one to the north.

The photos shown here were all taken in the southern section west of Highway 3, in November 2007.
