The outlying portions of downtown East St. Louis are decimated. Buildings stand separated by vast fields of unused parking lots or empty lots covered only with grass.

Amid the remnants stand a few remaining institutions, such as Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital. The original hospital building dates from 1926, when it was built as St. Mary's Hospital.
